Meeting Jack: Mo Puyau

We’ve asked our listeners to write in with the story of how they encountered C.S. Lewis. Here’s our premiere post from Mo Puyau:

Isn’t it funny how specific books seem to come into your life at just the right time?

I was sitting at a table after a fun concert by Trish Murphy at the old Rockefeller’s, having a good time, when Trish walked over.

We casually said a few words to one another, and for some reason I asked her what her favorite book was? She immediately lit up and said it was a children’s series written by C. S. Lewis called The Chronicles of Narnia.

I hadn’t expected that. I wondered what could be so compelling about these stories she obviously loved so much. I had heard of the series many years ago, but I had never had an interest in reading them. Now here, after a fun night of rock-n-roll, I began my journey into Narnia…

A young Mo Puau (“P.O”)

The next day I dropped by Barnes and Noble just to see if they had any of the Chronicles. Much to my surprise, there were four entire shelves of these books in many different sizes, and covers. I picked up what I thought was the first one called The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and brought it home.

It took me awhile to start reading it because my whole life was continuing to be turned upside down. I was in the process of packing my life’s possessions into brown cardboard boxes, to be stored in a warehouse indefinitely. The house that I once thought I would spend the rest of my life in, was sold. Though I’d already been staying most nights with my friends Jim and Ann, now it was official. I moved into a small room at the top of the stairs. Jake, Marc, and Lauren (7, 5, and 3) made me feel loved and welcomed, and I truly enjoyed being their Muncle Moey. It was here C. S. Lewis brought me home to discover in a new way, the beauty and magic of being a child of Narnia.
