One of our Patreon supporters, Mark, just shared something with me, following the birth of our daughter, Lucy….
In the 1970s, Brown became friends with the English composer Peter Maxwell Davies. Davies moved to Hoy in Orkney: the haunting Farewell to Stromness is his best-known work. There was only one other man, a bachelor, living on Hoy, and the the island’s future looked bleak. Then, miraculously, that man met and married an English girl. They had a daughter called Lucy. George and Peter wrote a song, Lullaby for Lucy for her.
Let all plants and creatures of the valley now Unite.
Lullaby for Lucy
Calling a new
Young one to join the celebration.
Rowan and lamb and waters salt and sweet
Entreat the
New child to the brimming
Dance of the valley,
A pledge and a promise.
Lonely they were long, the creatures of Rackwick, till
Lucy came among them, all brightness and light.
